Activities Involved in Fleet Management
Fleet management is a job that mainly deals with overseeing fleets of vehicles and coordinating all that relates to them. Vehicles here could be a city bus system, a cab company, school buses or even emergency health care vehicles. The job involves a mix of supervisory, operational and managerial duties that require at least some basic knowledge of automobile operations.
One activity involved in fleet operations is coordination of routine operations. This involves sharing out of day to day duties for the vehicles that are within the fleet. This will obviously involve drawing up and implementing the employee schedule, coordinating communication activities between the driver and the head quarters and assigning route to drivers. Fleet managers are also responsible for dealing with any problems that may crop up during the operations; things like vehicle breakdowns, accidents and so on.
Fleet managers also engage in vehicle maintenance to ensure that the vehicles are always in good working condition and perform optimally. This involves training workers on how best to treat their vehicles and organizing frequent checks to ensure the vehicles are in good condition. It also involves organizing for repairs and cleaning of the vehicles.
The other activity involved in fleet management is buying new vehicles. A fleet manager has to ensure that there are enough vehicles in the fleet always or the company will lose customers due to lack of enough vehicles. In case of increased workload or reduction of vehicles to accidents or other factors it is the work of the fleet manager to ensure that the fleet is replenished. He can even replace a good vehicle with one that is more economical.
A vehicle that no longer fits in the fleet for whatever reason has to be disposed. For instance, a vehicle that is no longer serviceable, or one that is too expensive to maintain. The fleet manager seeks to dispose the vehicle in such a manner that it will bring some money to the company.
